Holden Quote

To me, the quote that Mrs. Jorgensen chose for Holden, fits him. I take it as "Walk to the bear of your own drummer" You know? 'Better is one's own duty imperfectly carried out than, following perfectly the law of another. Better is death in the fulfillment of one's own law, for to follow another's law is perilous.' I take this quote as, do what you want to do. Who cares about society.

I'm reading the book "Into The Wild" One quote that stood out to me was "Society, man! You know, society! Cause, you know what I don't understand? I don't understand why people, why every fucking person is so bad to each other so fucking often. It doesn't make sense to me. Judgment. Control. All that, the whole spectrum. Well, it just..." This quote screams Holden to me. It's in a way saying "I don't understand why people are so phony all the time. Why can't people be normal?" That's just me, but when I picture Holden, I can see him asking himself the same questions that Chris asked. The control part in the quote is what really got me. Holden (to me) doesn't like control. He wants to do his thing, on his own time.

  1. I agree completely with you Lizzie. The Into the Wild quote is a great example of Holden and the questions he asks. I think he does ask questions like this to himself. Holden can not handle control I think. He likes to live wild and free but at the same time I think he misses home. He continues to say throughout the book " I can't go home until Tuesday or Wednesday" or whatever days he can't go home so I think he is sick of being on his own and wants to see his family again.

  2. I think that quote is a very good example of how Holden sees the world! He doesn't come out and say it, but I think you can tell that he hates the way people are treated. I wonder if it has anything to do with the way he is treated.. Do you think he is like this because his brother died? Maybe he feels like the world drew him an unlucky card and it was not fair!

  3. Great quote. I think it ties in great with Holden. It's like as soon as Allie died he didn't care what happened he thinks everyone is phony, it almost seems that it's allies death has caused all this depression and causing him to not care about anything

    1. I think that Holden is in a way like Chris the only difference is Chris decided to leave. While Holden is stuck right where he is and he doesn't allow himself to ignore everyone else and just do what he wants he has to stop and criticize everything.

  5. I love this connection so much. It seems like at that moment Chris and Holden are one and the same. I see Holden a lot like you do, in the fact that he doesn't like control, I think he just often times goes against it right away, kinda like he's just set on autopilot to do that. But why is he like this? That I want to know. Has he always been like this? Or does he act this way from something in his childhood? Maybe Allie's death?
